Discussion Topic |
| "What technologies will allow
biofuels to compete with the Middle East?" |
Background Information |
| The US has recently made significant efforts to adopt
ethanol. Can ethanol and other biofuels compete with petroleum-based
fuels from the Middle East and provide some independence from
fluctuating oil prices, while also having less of an impact on our
environment? Currently the two largest issues halting widespread
adoption of biofuels are profitability and scalability of production.
Is there a technological challenge common to the entire industry? Are
tax incentives for US production and restrictions on foreign sources of
biofuels an effective method for promoting biofuels in the US? What
role will the traditional oil companies of today play in the support,
development, and implementation of new technologies? |
