Stuart Hemphill

Vice President, Renewable and Alternative Power
Southern California Edison

Ira Ehrenpreis

Stuart R. Hemphill was appointed vice president of Renewable and Alternative Power for Southern California Edison (SCE) in 2008.  Hemphill is responsible for the origination of renewable contracts, managing and administering a $2.5-billion portfolio of existing renewable and alternative power contracts, and the administration of customer generation contracts, including distributed generation, photovoltaic, and wind applications.
Hemphill joined SCE in 1987 as an engineer in the company’s System Planning organization, where he evaluated new investments in transmission, distribution, generation, and energy efficiency.

In 1994, he began working for SCE’s parent company, SCEcorp (now Edison International), in the Corporate Development organization, where he developed business plans for new businesses and evaluated large technology investments.  From 1996 through 2000, he worked in Edison International’s Strategic Planning and New Business Development group, where he led initiatives such as new business startups, acquisitions, divestitures, performance improvement programs, and operating strategies.

In 2000, Hemphill was appointed director of Business Development for SCE.  His responsibilities included exploring new business opportunities, and assessing operational and organizational issues.  In 2002, he was appointed director of Resource Planning and Strategy, where he oversaw the development of SCE’s long-term plans and the economic and operational analysis of third-party power contracts and large-scale utility projects: generation, transmission, and demand-side management programs. He was appointed director of Renewable and Alternative Power in 2006.

Hemphill earned an MBA from California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from California State University, Fullerton.
